Frequently asked questions
Is quality lost?
No, when the MKV has H.264 picture and AAC sound, as most do: both are then copied bit for bit. HEVC, VP9 and AV1 picture is re-encoded at high quality with Plays everywhere, and copied with no loss with Keep the original format.
Why does the MP4 have no sound?
Films often have AC-3, E-AC-3 or DTS sound, which the browser cannot read, so the tool leaves it out and says so in the result. Opus, Vorbis, FLAC and MP3 sound is converted to AAC.
Are subtitles carried over?
No. Subtitles from an MKV file are not carried into the MP4. Save them separately, for example as SRT, and load them in your player.
What if the MKV has several sound tracks?
The sound track marked as default is used, usually the film's first language.
How large an MKV can I convert?
Up to 380 MB, because the whole MP4 is made in the browser's memory. For longer films, use a program on your computer.
