Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will the video be?
Phone clips often shrink several times, because phones record at a high data rate. A video that is already compressed shrinks less. If the result would be larger than the original, you get the original.
Is quality lost?
Every new compression loses some detail. With High quality the difference is hard to see, and Smallest file is for sending in a message, when size matters more than detail. Watch the result in the player before downloading.
How do I get an exact size, such as 25 MB for email?
Choose Target size and enter the number of MB. The tool works out the data rate from the video length and the sound, so the result lands just under that size. For a very small target, also choose a lower resolution to keep the picture clean.
Which browser do I need?
The tool uses WebCodecs, built into recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. If your browser cannot compress video, the tool tells you right away.
Which video formats does it accept?
MP4, MOV and M4V with H.264, HEVC, VP9 or AV1 picture, when your browser can open them. WebM is not supported. The result is always an MP4 with H.264 picture.
What about the sound?
AAC sound, as phones and cameras record it, is copied unchanged. A video with another kind of sound is compressed without sound, and the tool says so. You can also remove the sound on purpose.
