Compress PNG images

A PNG with millions of colours can often be saved with 256 or fewer colours with almost no visible difference. The tool picks the most important colours, optionally adds dithering for smooth gradients, and saves an indexed PNG that is usually several times smaller. Transparency is kept.

Frequently asked questions

What does dithering do?

Dithering mixes dots of nearby colours, so gradients and shadows look smooth even with fewer colours. Turn it off for logos with flat colours.

Why is my photo still large?

Photos have many shades, so PNG cannot shrink them much. For photos, use JPG or WebP in the Compress images tool.

Is transparency lost?

No. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are kept in the colour palette.
