Pixel art from an image

The tool shrinks the image into large pixels and limits the number of colours, like old video games. Pick an automatic palette or a classic one, turn on dithering for gradients, and download the image enlarged without blurring or at true size for a game or cross stitch.

Frequently asked questions

Which pixel size is best?

For a photo of 1000 to 2000 pixels, 8 to 16 looks good. Bigger pixels give a stronger retro look.

What are the Game Boy and PICO-8 palettes?

They are the colours of classic and fantasy consoles. Game Boy has four shades of green and PICO-8 has sixteen colours.

Why PNG?

PNG keeps the crisp pixel edges without compression artefacts.
