Splitting a PDF helps when you need to send a few pages from a large attachment, separate invoices or prepare individual chapters. First decide whether you want several small files or one new file containing selected pages. That decision determines which processing mode will produce the result you need.
The Split PDF tool offers individual pages, page ranges, equal groups and selected page extraction. This guide explains the differences and how to check the output. Start by opening the original in your usual PDF viewer and noting which pages belong in each new document.
Use the page position inside the file
The selection field uses the position of each page in the PDF, starting at one. A number printed on the page may be different. Covers, contents pages and introductions often use their own numbering. Check the actual position instead of copying page references from a table of contents without looking at the document.
Compare the tool's page thumbnails with the source file. Check the beginning and end of every section you intend to extract. If an attachment starts at the bottom of an earlier page, or a table continues onto the next one, include the necessary context. A page heading alone may not identify the complete section.
Prepare a readable copy with Rotate PDF if pages are sideways. Correct orientation makes selection and later checks easier. Keep the source separately, especially when you will produce several different extracts from the same document for different recipients. Each new selection should begin from a known complete version.
Make a separate PDF for every page
The individual page option creates one result per source page. An eight page document becomes eight PDF files, each containing one page. This works for invoices or certificates that already occupy one independent page each, with no continuation or supporting notes on the following page of the source document.
Do not choose this mode automatically for invoices that span several pages. It would separate content that belongs together. Check the layout and use ranges or equal groups instead. The tool allows up to 500 output groups in one run, which matters when working with a particularly long source document.
Download results separately or as a ZIP archive. Filenames include source page references to help with checking, but open the content before renaming anything. If you send a ZIP to someone else, confirm that the destination accepts archives and that the recipient can extract the files before using them.
Create a document for each page range
Range mode treats each comma separated entry as a separate output group. Entering 1-3,4-6 produces two PDFs: one with the first three pages and another with the next three. Entering 2,5-7 creates one file for page two and another file containing pages five through seven.
This distinction matters when you need one document containing nonadjacent pages. In range mode, 1,3,5 creates three results. Use selected page extraction to put those three pages into a single PDF. Check the mode name before processing, then read the range field once more against your notes from the source file.
Each range must run from a lower number to a higher number and stay within the document. The entry 7-3 is invalid, as is a page that does not exist. Overlapping ranges can repeat a source page in different results. That can be useful for a shared cover, but check that the overlap is intentional.
Divide the file into groups of equal length
Equal group mode uses a specified number of pages per output document. If the source has ten pages and you choose three per group, the results contain pages 1-3, 4-6, 7-9 and page ten. The last group can be shorter because the tool does not add blank pages to fill it.
This method works when each record occupies the same number of pages. If some invoices are longer than others, fixed groups can cut a record at the wrong place. Use ranges based on the content in that case, even when preparing the page list takes longer than selecting an automatic division.
Page count does not determine file size. Two pages with large photographs may use more space than ten pages of text. If an attachment has an MB limit, extract the content you need first. Then try PDF compression if the resulting file is still larger than the receiving form permits.
Extract selected pages into one new file
Choose extraction when you want one PDF containing only selected pages. Click the page thumbnails or type page numbers and ranges. Entering 1-2,5 creates one document containing the first, second and fifth pages. This is useful for a short extract from a longer report, application or set of supporting documents.
When the page field contains text, it takes priority over thumbnail selections. Clear the field if you want to rely on clicked thumbnails alone. Selected pages are sorted in ascending order and duplicates are removed. Entering 5,1 therefore does not place page five before page one; the source order is retained.
If you want almost the entire document except a few unnecessary pages, Delete PDF pages may be simpler. Use Merge PDF to combine sections from different source files. Choosing the operation that fits the task avoids trying to handle selection, rearrangement and several source documents through one range field.
Check the downloaded documents
Open every result and inspect its page count, first heading and last line. Look at places where tables or paragraphs continue across pages. A useful extract should make sense to someone who does not have the original. Include a page explaining symbols or table headings when that context is necessary.
Splitting copies pages into new PDF documents instead of converting them to JPG pictures. Still, check searching, text selection, bookmarks and form fields if you depend on them. Do not assume that every feature of a complex source document will behave identically inside a new file containing only some of its pages.
If the recipient asks for an image, open the extracted document in PDF to JPG. If the content needs editing, consider PDF to Word. Changing formats is a separate decision. For ordinary delivery of selected pages, the new PDF may already be exactly what the recipient needs.
Prepare attachments that are easy to identify
For an application with several separate attachments, check each filename against its contents before uploading. Open every file you intend to send instead of relying only on a number in its name. The PDF compression guide can help if a correctly extracted section still exceeds the receiving form's limit.
The tool accepts one PDF up to 60 MB. For a password protected source, prepare an authorized unprotected copy in an application where you can open it; this splitting tool has no password field. When processing fails, check the page range and source document before repeatedly adding the same file.
Give the completed sections clear names and retain the original separately. If you later need to combine them again, the PDF merging guide explains ordering and final checks. Visit the other PDF tools for rotation, conversion and size adjustments after you have confirmed that each attachment contains the right pages.
Apply the steps to your file.
