PDF to Word is useful when you need to revise a document, add a paragraph, or reuse text in a new version. Start by checking whether the PDF contains actual text or only pictures of pages. That determines whether ordinary extraction is enough or whether you need optical character recognition, usually called OCR.
The PDF to Word tool creates a DOCX file from the extracted content. Its purpose is to give you text you can edit, with a review in your word processor afterwards. This guide explains the settings, the limits of layout reproduction, and the checks to complete before sharing your new document.
Check whether the text can be selected
Open the PDF in a reader and try selecting an ordinary sentence. Copy it into an empty text field. If real letters appear in a sensible order, the document has a usable text layer. That is a good starting point for conversion, although the presence of text does not guarantee that a complex layout will carry over cleanly.
If individual words cannot be selected, the page may be a scan or photograph. OCR tries to recognize the characters in that image. Some scanned documents already include a text layer that is not obvious from their appearance. Copying a few words is therefore a more useful check than judging only how the page looks.
When you need plain content to copy rather than a Word document, PDF to text is a simpler route. For a single photograph or screenshot, choose image to text. Matching the tool to the source avoids extra conversions that add work without improving the information you can recover from the file.
Choose settings that match the source
Add the PDF and review the controls. For a document with usable text, first try conversion without enabling recognition of scanned pages. The tool reads text, arranges it into paragraphs, and creates a DOCX. Each source page starts on a new page in the output, but the arrangement within a page can change.
For scanned pages, enable Recognise text on scanned pages. Choose the language that matches the document: Bosnian and English together, Bosnian with Croatian and Serbian Latin, or English. The Serbian support named in that option refers to Latin script. Do not assume it promises the same recognition quality for Cyrillic text.
Start conversion and wait for the DOCX download. OCR loads the required language data and performs recognition inside the browser. Save the output before closing the tab. If you are working with many pages on a phone, try a smaller document first to check whether the process and resulting text meet your needs.
Understand scans converted without OCR
A scanned page without a text layer has no ordinary text to copy into Word. When recognition is disabled, the tool can place that page into the DOCX as an image. The document opens in Word, but the letters inside the picture do not become normal text that you can edit directly.
The DOCX extension alone is therefore not proof that conversion produced the result you wanted. Click inside several sentences and try moving the cursor between letters. If the whole page image is selected instead, return to the source PDF and enable OCR. For an original JPG photograph, JPG to Word is another available route.
A clear source helps recognition. When photographing a paper document, keep the camera square to the page and avoid shadows across the text. The document scanner can help prepare a photograph, but it cannot recover characters outside the frame or letters that are completely blurred. Taking a clearer photograph is often more useful than applying more filters.
Check pages that mix text and photographs
A PDF can contain ordinary text pages, scanned attachments, and pages with both kinds of content. This tool makes its decision separately for each page. When it finds enough text to extract, it uses that text. OCR applies to pages with no extracted text or very little text, so enabling it does not promise to recognize every photograph embedded in a page that already has a text layer.
Check a photographed receipt even if the heading above it transferred correctly into Word. If the photograph's contents are missing, extract it as an image and recognize that content separately. Review the words before adding them to the appropriate place in the DOCX. The same caution applies to a poor existing text layer: enabling OCR does not mean this tool will automatically replace it. Compare the output with the visible source page and identify the missing information first.
Expect differences in tables and columns
A PDF describes where content appears on a page, while Word works with text that can flow into a different arrangement. This tool transfers text and paragraphs but does not promise identical fonts, colors, tables, or columns. A simple letter is therefore a different conversion task from a form containing several columns and a wide table.
Read the transitions between paragraphs in a document with multiple columns. Content from the right column may appear in an unexpected sequence. Check table rows against the original PDF. A value can be recognized correctly but placed beside the wrong label, which is more consequential than a purely cosmetic difference in spacing or typeface.
If your aim is to preserve the exact visual appearance, consider whether you need DOCX at all. PDF to PNG exports pages as images for display, but does not make their text editable. For revising or reusing the written content, continue in Word and rebuild the layout that your new document actually needs.
Compare characters and figures with the original
Open the DOCX beside the PDF. First check headings, paragraph order, and missing sections. Then review characters with diacritics, including č, ć, đ, š, and ž in Bosnian text. For OCR output, also check easily confused pairs such as O and 0 or I and 1. Correct-looking sentences do not prove that every number is accurate.
Verify names, dates, and monetary amounts individually. Do not fill in an unreadable value by guessing. Return to a clearer source or obtain another copy of the document. A spelling checker can help with ordinary words, but it does not necessarily know a person's name or which number belongs in a particular field.
For a long document, extract a few representative pages first with split PDF. Include a plain text page and the page with the most complicated layout. If several source documents need combining, the PDF merging guide explains how to arrange them before conversion without turning the entire package into photographs.
Save an edited version with a clear purpose
After making corrections, save the DOCX under a new name and reopen it to review the layout. When you need only part of the source content, move the checked paragraphs into a document that already uses your preferred styles. This can save time spent correcting empty lines and page breaks that have no purpose in the new version.
Keep the original PDF as a reference while checking the information. File processing and OCR on this site stay local, as explained on the privacy page. The useful outcome is a document whose text you can edit and verify against its source, even when the final layout still needs work in your word processor.
Apply the steps to your file.
